Good points... I guess what I really wanted to push was the idea that we should take the time to inform ourselves on the issues that matter to us. I don't expect people to become "experts" in any given field, but at least have more than a veneer of knowledge on subjects that are important enough to us to debate on.

Boo. Misleading title - I thought it was going to be about how hard it is to find a good plumber. :-)
I find the complexity of most modern issues to be the crux of the issue. We can't know all the nuances of every issue. It's possible to go really deep on a few but most of us tend to go for broad knowledge on many.
My challenge is that it is usually those who know enough on a given topic to be dangerous but who sound authoritative in their recitation of "facts" regardless of their actual knowledge level who seem to win the day. This prevents the rest of us from being able to learn more about the issue. Admittedly we all do this as do the media sources we consume.
I kind of wish prior to discussion of a complex issue we were all forced to sit down and read a good primer so we are all on the same level playing field and the discussion could be focused on analysis and recommendations.
Now my rant is over. Happy holidays.

While I agree with your general argument, I have to question some of your logic...

While you focus on unity in your final paragraph, you are opposed to allowing a democratically elected party exercise its constitutional rights as a political party. Whether you believe in the BQ's politics or not, they were elected by Canadians. To fuel the rhetoric propagated by Harper and others within the Conservative party does nothing but create a larger schism between Quebec and the rest of Canada. I fear Harper has done more harm to that relationship in the last 2 months than anyone else has done in years.

So yes...I agree this was not the right time for a coalition for a myriad of reasons. I also think we would be smart to avoid further disenfranchising the democratically elected party in Quebec...

Cheers

I'm not a "politically active" person, really. I vote, but I'm not a member of any party – and I typically vote for individuals – not for who I would like to see as Prime Minister. The idea of a coalition, in theory, doesn’t bother me at all. In this case though, I feel strongly that the coalition would not be in the best interest of Canada or Canadians.

The proposed coalition has a great deal more to do with ensuring the fiscal well-being of those parties not currently in power than it does with addressing any loss of confidence in the conservatives on the part of parliament or the public – or so it seems to me. But that’s not the reason I’m so concerned.

For me the distinction between a coalition in concept, and the one that has been proposed is that the proposed one relies upon a political party which exists specifically to destroy my country. I think that anything that serves to empower, legitimize or invigorate the Bloc represents a serious threat to Canadian unity – and it is for that reason that I am so strongly opposed to it.

While I understand your concerns regarding this particular implementation of an alternative user interface, the real concept I am trying to push is user experience innovation in the general sense. While this iteration may not replace traditional methodologies anytime soon, the fact that there are intellegent and creative folks out there trying to provide net new experiences is inspriring in my opinion. I would also add that innovation in UX is not limited to just the traditional OS space (Windows, Linux...etc.), but also includes game consoles, mobiles, ATM's, TV's, DVR's, MID/UMPC's and more... As Nintendo, Ubuntu and Apple have shown, providing an innovative, intuitive and pleasant user interface is good for business.

Great, a graphically and some-what functionally enchanced desktop but where is the underlying value? It would be intersting if there were other attributes, such as; task awareness or priority recognition. I mean seriously, if we have an unorganized physical desk than why would i want to have another cluttered virtual desk? I would like to have something that makes my life easier rather than just another fancier way of masking the same mess.

I am personally concerned with privacy; what will privacy really mean in 2017 or perhaps a better question is what does it actually mean today? We have become a society accustom to sharing and divulging more than enough information without the assistance of technology. Now i can only imagine the possibilities and consequences associated with introducing these new networked devices/software to our primative market.

As for the Jetsons, would you really want to be under constant surveillance by your boss, even in your own home? Perhaps we can apply a more modern day example; Your Crackberry or your electronic leash (as i like to call it) is your current surveillance; your employer can reach you 99% of the time, anytime! Now imagine that crackberry coupled with PathIntelligent software (mobile phone location tracking), not only can your employer reach you but now they can find you!! Time for a second phone! =P
