Back on July 18th 2008, I posted a story about an environment challenge that Al Gore issued to the American people:

“Today I challenge our nation to commit to producing 100 percent of our electricity from renewable energy and truly clean carbon-free sources within 10 years”

Many people at the time felt that his plan was beyond ambitious and completely realistic and unfortunately his challenge fell mostly on deaf or already converted ears.  Well, on October 1st 2008, Eric Schmidt (CEO of “The Google” as Dubya would put it)  announced a proposal by  Google entitled Clean Energy 2030.  The proposal lays out at a high level what is required to make real change on our collective energy strategies and also includes examples from Gore and Pickens

Google Earth showing the effects of climate changeThe things I really find inspiring and hopeful from Google’s announcement are 1) It legitimizes and adds credibility to the aforementioned plans by Gore, Pickes and others.  While many people feel their plans were ambitious and unrealistic, they are necessary and possible.  2) It’s Google…what other company on the planet has the will, capital (human and financial), resources and ability to take on a challenge of this magnitude and pull it off?  If any organization can pull this off, it’s Google.  Hats off to the billionaire boys from Stanford.
